Did you know you or a family member could be forced by the government to take psychiatric drugs, even if you are living in your own home? These drugs are delivered to homes in six states by the government, where people are forced to take them by court order.
In 1999, governmental monies were given to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), mandated to fund the “Program of Assertive Community Treatment,” (PACT), the program that sends mental health workers directly into people’s homes, making them take strong psychiatric drugs called, neuroleptics. The workers also give injections in the homes and to ensure drugs are swallowed, the patients must take a beverage with their medications.
An “Involuntary Outpatient Commitment” exists, which is the court order requiring these drugs to be taken. The government, through this court order, can force the use of these drugs on people, even when there is evidence that these can lead to brain shrinkage and severe emotional damage. PACT is used in six states and is being tried in 19 other states. NAMIhopes to go national by 2002.
PACT looks good on the outside to people because it keeps people out of locked facilities and staff are available, on demand anytime of day or night and offer rehabilitation services to patients. But, NAMI is sponsored by major drug manufacturers and the distributed drugs can kill, cause addiction and mental problems.
